Subject: mellman.org Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 11:54:37 -0400 (EDT) ........................................................................... Mellman domain News: Just wanted to let you know that I picked up the mellman.org domain. You should all now have an email address of [your-name]@mellman.org as well as the mellman.net version you're receiving this mail from. The two domains are (at this time) operated by two different hosts so if there are mail problems with one you can send mail to the other until the problem is fixed or to help determine where the problem actually is. No one currently has a web page, but if you ever do then your .org address of: www.mellman.org/[your-name]/ will simply point to (i.e. automatically load): www.mellman.net/[your-name]/ You can see this in action by going to www.mellman.org (you actually don't really need the www). After it loads look at your address line, and you'll see it says www.mellman.net. ....................................................................... Comments (don't bother reading if you don't have time): I don't know how often I'll send mail to users of the mellman domain, but I promise they will be few and far between. I will also put a copy of each message on the main mellman.net web page. I picked up mellman.org because I'd heard that at least one company is going out and picking up names from the phone book to then sell to individuals. That's unsubstantiated, and frankly a little hard to believe, but I've seen similar things done (back in the early days of the web I saw a company pick up tens of thousands of names like animal names, places, and other sorts of common nouns and verbs). I will also be picking up the .web domain (due out this summer), and possibly some others (like the .sex domain so I can park it to prevent anyone from having a porn site using my (our) name - yes I know it's unlikely, but at $35/yr it's pretty cheap insurance). No plans for the .banc or .shop domains, and Nate Mellman of Columbus Ohio already has the .com version (it's inactive). That's all. cya b
